COURSE OVERVIEW

Digital Graphics and Layout is a where we meet together as a group twice a week to clarify directions, answer questions and gain individual feedback/critique on assignments. With than in mind, it is imperative that you are prepared for class each week with questions and to confirm your progress. I will be presenting material to you from the Digital Graphics and Layout course tab on the graphicdesignthoughts.wordpress.com website as well as the canvas course site.

More specifically, Digital Graphics and Layout will introduce the fundamentals of image manipulation, page layout, file formats and file organization. Through exploratory projects in design the student will have an opportunity to distinguish between various design approaches, software specific strengths/purposes, and minor troubleshooting techniques. The major focus of the class will be an introduction to the basics of vector drawing on the computer (first half semester), as well as page layout design techniques for single and multi-page documents (second half semester).

Every medium creates a symbiotic relationship between the content and the end-user. Illustrating this concept, Marshall McLuhan theorized that “The medium is the message” or at the very least the message is influenced by the medium. In other words, news stories delivered on television by anchors influence the audience much differently than the same content delivered via a newspaper, radio or magazine. This contextual influence continues with the development of desktop publishing and social media news delivery and all forms of digitized communication. Understanding McLuhan’s words more completely is of underlying importance to one entering today’s world of professional graphic design.
