- Previous Class Sample Booklet: Papercuts 2013
This booklet was Perfect Bound (not saddle stitched), therefor the layout shows individual pages, not two-page spreads. However, the typography, content, and overall layout is a good example of this assignment. It was produced by the Production Class in 2013.

Assignment: Design and Print a booklet describing the qualities and characteristics of paper. Examples of paper characteristics include the following:
- texture
- weight
- show through
- Transparency, Translucency, Opacity
- durability
- strength
- color
- categories of paper (writing, text, cover, etc.)
Think of your booklet as a resource booklet about paper. In other words, it should be a handy reference for you as a designer that you can refer to when making any decisions about how to spec (choose) the best paper for a design project.
For this assignment you will function as a member of a design and production team where everyone will assume specific roles in the workflow of the design and production of this piece.
For this project, it is your responsibility to make decisions about and problem solve technical, design and production issues. You have all the knowledge at this point to achieve excellent design results. I serve only as a consultant on this project, not as art director. Your group will collectively make decisions on how to solve several problems, both in the design and in the production of your booklets. Your challenge will be to work together as a team in an efficient and productive manner. The result will be an indication of how production decisions can affect design results and vice versa.
Since this is a class/group project, it means that as a group you need to organize yourselves so that everyone has an individual role in the design and production workflow and creation of the booklet. You will need to determine who will take specific responsibility for which tasks. You should select leaders such as design editors and an overall project manager to keep everyone on track. Your class will need to decide on a theme and title and on a design that will produce enough individual copies for each of you plus two more. Examples of the individual roles that are necessary to do this successfully include the following (Your group may modify these roles, but everyone must take an equal and active part in the project workflow):
- Overall Project Manager (co-managers)—oversees the workflow for the entire project, sets goals, deadlines and coordinates the various individuals and groups. (Skills: organization, decision making, giving direction, skill and knowledge in all/most phases of the project). Project manager uploads a pdf of the final booklet to the Canvas assignment page.
- Research Lead/Director— oversees the research of content (Skills: organization, giving direction, research, writing)
- Everyone is involved with collecting/doing research. Each class member must submit to the group accurate content on some aspect of paper.
- Copy Lead/Editor—proofreading and assuring that
copy is correct and accurate. Works closely with the Research Lead/Director (Skills, writing, spelling, reading) - Design Lead/Director —oversees a consistent application of design principles and unity across the print layout, works closely with the project and Research Managers, oversees standards for graphics images, responsible for either creating or directing others in meeting agreed upon graphic image requirements; correct and consistent resolution, size, file format, image style, etc.(Skills: giving direction, layout, typography, image creation, inDesign)
- Everyone is involved with the design proposal stage. Each class member must submit to the group a layout design proposal to be considered for the overall look and layout of the pub.
- Printing/Production Lead/Director —primary responsibility is managing production workflow: setting the timeline, materials, equipment, paper. (Skills: giving direction, organization, printing management)
- Printing Team Members
- Binding Lead/Director (Skills: giving direction, organization, binding management)
- Binding Team Members
Design
Layout and typography are the two main design components of this project. Since it is a multi-page project, the consistent treatment of common design elements from page to page helps to establish a sense of grouping and hierarchy and results in a unique rhythm throughout the publication. Make group decisions about how images, type and space will be treated. Establish character, paragraph and object styles to aid you with this particular goal.
- Sketch out different layout options for your booklet including positioning and size of key elements, you can then select the most appropriate one to develop further
- Take time to experiment with design ideas before you start to produce your final cover
- Maintain a consistent color scheme
- Produce a dummy to plan the sequence and organization of the pages.
- General Design Decisions to be made include the following:
- typography
- image creation
- page layout
- use of any specialty printing techniques (embossing, foil stamping, etc.)
- writing
- parts of a book (TOC, dedication page, colophon, credits, authors, etc.)
- Title/Theme of booklet
- Cover
General Outline of Production Workflow:
- Your due date is Monday APRIL 11 (firm deadline. Do not ask for an extension)
- Backward map the project—Create a project calendar establishing benchmark dates—what needs to be accomplished by what days and by whom.
- Make group decisions about who does what.
- Theme and Name your booklet
- Research using the paper swatch books and design books located on the shelves in the Design Library as well as the internet links provided at the top of this page
- Order any paper if necessary
- Use MS Word to write content to be imported into inDesign
- Use Illustrator to create graphics to be imported into inDesign
- Use Photoshop to edit and create pixel-based images to be imported into inDesign
- Use inDesign to create the page layout
- Decide if there will be bleeds or not
- Create a mock-up using the same paper you intend to use for the final booklets to determine thickness
- Create a mock-up to judge layout order/sequence, images and typography
- Print booklets and cover
- Assemble Booklets
- Critique your group process to aid you in completion of the next/final project which is also a group project.
