Illustrator offers a diverse set of drawing tools, including the Pen, Pencil, Blob Brush, Curvature, Eraser, Line Segment, Brush, and Shaper tools, each serving unique purposes for creating and manipulating vector graphics.

Main Drawing Tools in Adobe Illustrator

  • Curvature Tool—This tool simplifies drawing smooth curves by clicking and dragging, making it easier for beginners than the Pen tool.
  • Pencil Tool (keyboard shortcut is N) —This tool allows you to draw freehand lines and curves, useful for sketching and creating detailed illustrations.
  • Paint Brush Tool (keyboard shortcut is B)
  • Pen Tool (keyboard shortcut is P)—The Pen tool is a versatile tool for creating shapes, paths, and curves, essential for creating illustrations, logos, and artwork.
  • Blob Brush Tool—This tool draws shapes with anchor points, making it easier to create freehand designs and fills.

Here’s a further breakdown of drawing tools in Adobe Illustrator:

  • Eraser Tool:This tool allows you to remove areas of shapes or paths, providing precision when editing artwork.
  • Line Segment Tool:This tool is specifically designed for drawing straight lines at any angle, and holding the Shift key constrains lines to 45-degree increments.
  • Brush Tool:This tool allows you to draw with expressive thick-to-thin lines, similar to a physical brush.
  • Shaper Tool:This tool allows you to freehand draw shapes and automatically creates a perfectly designed shape, even if your hand-drawn shape was a bit squiggly or lopsided.
  • Lasso Tool:This selection tool allows you to select multiple shapes and/or vector points by freely drawing around the objects you want to select.
  • Magic Wand Tool:This tool allows you to click on a single object to automatically select everything in your workspace with the same fill color.
  • Stroke:Illustrator’s Stroke Panel lets you manipulate graphic properties of a vector line such as width, dashes, and arrowheads.
  • Shape Builder Tool:This tool allows you to merge, subtract, and intersect shapes with ease, enabling the creation of complex designs by combining basic shapes.

The tiny white triangle that is in the lower right hand corner of some of the tools indicates that there are additional tool options hiding behind that particular tool. To see and use those additional tools you will need to simply press and hold your mouse on the tool until the options show. Then, continue to hold the mouse down and drag all the way to the right hand side of the options pop up. This will “tear off” or make the options pop up a small floating window where you can choose the specific optional tool you want to use.

The black, or selection tool is for selecting entire objects, The white, or direct selection tool is for selecting parts of or elements within, a larger whole shape or a group of objects.
