The vast majority of all packaging needs to address three distinct areas for the product and company that makes that product.

  • safety/protection of the product
  • advertising/promotion of the product/company
  • extension of the company Brand/Visual Identity

Those areas are addressed differently by each product that is packaged. They are also not necessarily addressed equally. (One product may need more protection while a different product may emphasize product promotion, etc.)

A fourth area which all smart designers also consider is Environmental Impact. This means making serious effort to:

  • Reduce negative environmental  damage by choosing “green” options for production (printing, ink, alternative processes, and assembly)
  • Choosing materials with high post-consumer content (not simply recycled)
  • Minimizing transportation miles
  • Minimizing the amount of materials used
