Overview:
At the most basic level, his assignment requires you to add motion to letters and words. You have the choice to do this for either a practical purpose or an experimental one. The final version should be between 30 seconds and 2 minutes max. in length. The final version will also be shown in and make use of the immersive environment of the Library’s XSpace. We will be using WatchOut at that point in the project.

Animated Type Movie WatchOut Project Due Wednesday, April 9
- “Type in Motion” is the art of animating text, making it move and change in a visually appealing way.
- How it’s used:
- Motion Graphics: It’s a key element in creating dynamic and engaging visuals for videos, commercials, and other motion graphics projects.
- Film: “Type in Motion” is used in film titles, credits, and on-screen text to enhance the storytelling and visual impact.
- Branding and Advertising: Kinetic typography can be used to create memorable logos, slogans, and other visual elements for brands.
- Explainer Videos: Animated text can be used to present information and concepts in a clear and engaging way.
- Examples:
- Kinetic Typography: This is a common term for “Type in Motion” and refers to the use of animated text to create a dynamic visual effect.
- Motion Text: Another name for animated typography, often used in motion design.
Assignment:
Add motion to letters for one of the following:
- a movie title sequence
or - an experimental art sequence
You may choose to use part or all of the same sources you used for the Dialog assignment.
You may choose to animate the credits for an existing movie.
You may choose to animate the text for the lyrics of a song or poem.
You may make use of any software, medium or combinations of media and effects that you choose.
Do not literally interpret words. Instead, interpret underlying concepts, themes or feelings.
In other words don’t treat words like falling like this :
F
A
L
L
I
N
G
Instead, try to visually interpret the feeling of falling, or the effect of falling, or the possibility of falling, etc.
What ever you do, the effects/motion that you apply to the type should continue the basic typographic purpose that ALL type variables are supposed to do—serve or enhance the meaning of the words themselves, not distract from them.
XSpace Presentation
The final presentation of your animation will be in the XSPace. This means that you will be maximizing the immersive environment of seeing imagery and hearing sound from four different projectors. You will what to design/plan the order/sequence in which each of those projectors shows the audience something. Explore, timing, cropping, overlapping and motion between projectors using the WatchOut timeline.
Your design approach to this space should be one that increases the EXPERIENCE of the words—their meaning, and ultimately give us a “teaser” about the film itself or the feeling of the dialog behind the words you used.
