ASSIGNMENT
- Typeset, print and print a quotation from a designer about design.
- Locate a quote from a designer that has meaning to you.
- Write a short paragraph in your own words explaining what the quote means to you.
- Ttypeset a page containing both the quote and your description of it.
- Print enough of your design for each member of the class plus 2 more.
(for the spring 2025 semester, this means you will need to print an edition of 8 prints.)
PROCESS
Set-Up—Typesetting
- Research and decide on your quote
- Write a short description
- Decide on typeface, font, leading and line length for both the quote and the description
- Pay attention to line length (40–60 characters or and average of an alphabet and 1/2) in length)
- Cut enough leading to line length for as many lines as your paragraph requires plus 2 more
- typeset/compose your description
Lock up—Chase
- Move both Quote and descriptive paragraph onto the registration template and center within the template lines
- Place a chase around your quote and paragraph
- Lock everything within the chase using the wooden furniture, reglets and quoins
- Slightly loosen and using the leveling block and Quoin Key, tap everything to level, then re-tighten
- Carefully test the lock up to make sure everything is tight and won’t drop out
- Using a drop of vegetable oil and toothbrush, clean the type, dry off
Lock up—Press
- Move your chase to the press
- Lock in
- Register the image to practice paper
- Move the registration pins to locate the proper location of the paper
- Clean up and disassemble
Spring semester 2025 class prints will be a collection of quotations. This collection will be held together in a ”Mother Folder”. Use the template below to create this Mother Template.
